Bumann—who was second in the championships held on Tortola last year—had a winning time of 1 hour, 3 minutes and 22 seconds, to finish 18 seconds ahead of Guadeloupe’s Louis Teplier, who was timed in 1:03.40. Bermuda’s Garth Thomson was third in 1:04.51. “I won’t say I was surprised but I was aiming for a podium spot,” Bumann said. “I expected Louis Teplier who is a strong rider to be there and I knew he was the man to beat. But, I also knew I was stronger than last year. I’ve been working for this all year, cycled about 10,000 miles to get in shape so I’m very pleased with the result.” Bumann was 10th in the road race with a time of 3 hours 31 minutes and 18 seconds. “That race was very difficult because half the field was from Martinique and Guadeloupe and they controlled the race,” he explained. “When they took off on the third lap I didn’t notice until the fifth lap and it was too late to organize a chase.”
Sue Brown blistered the time trial course in 35.55 seconds with Adamson grabbing the second spot in 37:11, while Belize’s Shalini Zabaneh followed in 38:44, as the only riders under 40 minutes. Brown was coming off a comfortable eight minute victory over Zabaneh in Saturday’s road race, after turning in a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 22 seconds, to Zabaneh’s 2:13.29. Martinique’s Guylaine was credited with the same time. “I’ve finished third three times in those events and my goal was to do better and I worked very hard in the last six months to achieve that and I did, so I’m very happy about that,” Brown said. “After winning the road race, I knew the strength of the field since I won by a wide margin, so I knew I would do good in the time trial.” Adamson, who missed her flight and was unable to ride in Saturday’s road race, said had part of her focus been on preparing for the time trial. “I did better than I thought,” Adamson said. “I was determined to get on the podium I would have liked to get the gold, but the silver for me for a first time it was absolutely brilliant.” Adamson said she first raced against Brown at the Jason Bally Memorial 100K and was beaten by a minute, the same as in the time trial. “We’ve got this thing going about a minute, so I’ll have to narrow the gap next time,” she said.
