Christopher Jr. wins BVICF Season Opener

In what can be described as a heart-pounding and thrilling 5-mile sprint, young Darel Christopher Jr. carted off the first victory of the BVI Cycling Federation when the 2010 season opened on Sunday around Road Town.
Though the race route was not closed as was announced by the Ministry of Communication and Works, volunteers helped to ensure that traffic flowed and cyclists safely completed their race.
Christopher Jr. sprinted to victory in a time of 16 minutes 37 seconds, leaving Neil Thomas and Antonio Andrews to battle in a sprint-finish for second and third places respectively.
From a field of 11 riders, Kay Reddy surprisingly came in fourth, and claimed first place in the Ladies division. She was followed by Sam Tucker in fifth place who was also the winner of the Master division.

On Sunday the BVI Cycling Federation hosted the 9th annual Jason Bally Memorial Race.

Team St. Martin would take the two top spots. Orelien Moyon was the winner with a time of 3:12.22’ — almost ten minutes faster than the second place finisher.
The event started on the road in front of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and headed east to the airport. Cyclists then turned back and headed to Brandy Wine Bay and back to the start/finish line for one lap. The Elite Men Division did seven laps for a total of 73 miles and the Elite Women completed five laps, while the Fun/Novice Division completed two laps.

More than 30 cyclists competed in the event.

The Jason Bally Memorial is held each year to honour Mr. Bally, a cyclist from Trinidad, who was fatally shot in Sea Cows Bay in 1999, after robbers fled the area. Mr. Bally's killers still remain at large. A plaque hangs at the site where Mr. Bally was killed.

The night before the race, a candle light service was held in Mr. Bally’s memory. In the past, a moment of silence was held before the race. But this year things were different with the race being held at HLSCC on the following day.......

TORTOLA-In a reversal of last weekend’s results, Chris Ghiorse got the better of Orano Andrews this time around to win the BVI Cycling Federation’s College Classic season opener in 1 hour 20 mins and 55seconds. Andrews was 2nd and credited with the same time. Philippe Leroy surprised Mark Smith by nipping him at the line for 3rd. Gareth Thomas rounded out the top 5 finishers.

The race, which attracted 18 cyclists, was very fast from the gun. The top 10 riders were very competitive. “I was disappointed with the turn out, but was impressed with the competitiveness of the cyclists in the beginning,” President David Thomas said. “You could see that at least they came to race and I like that!” The 28mile race that took riders from Pisces restaurant on Frenchman’s Cay, up to the HLSCC and back to West End was very highly contested today.......
