Last year we had 57 women taking part and this year we are hoping to have at least 100.”

Compared to last year’s inaugural event, Vieira they have done a lot of public relations work and several partners have come on board, including OGIER, who is sponsoring all the pink T-shirts for race participants and Blossoms will provide all the flowers........

TORTOLA-Of all the attacks and counter attacks made, Chris Ghiorse saved his best attack for last to outsprint teammate Mark Smith during Sunday’s 60-mile Cable and Wireless/bMobile Challenge that attracted 24 cyclists, including two from Antigua, and one from St. Vincent.

“This was a very tactical race today although the average speeds were way down, but there were moments when people were going pretty hard and feeling each other out and attacking,” Ghiorse recalled. “Antigua—God bless them—they were severely outnumbered and I told the guys that with so few Antiguans, we really have to ride our own race for each other......

Ghiorse had a winning time of 1 hour, 25 minutes and 13 seconds in the rain affected race. Christopher followed in 1:25.14 with Mark Smith third in 1:25.15, in the race that went from West End to the H. Lavity Souttt Community College in Paraquita Bay and return.

“The race came down to a sprint between six of us because of the rains that affected us on the hills going out to the college,” Ghiorse explained. “Darel put in a move that was a little early, which made it a little easier for me to go and follow him. With a little more experience, I think it’s going to be harder to beat him in the sprint.....
