ATLANTA, Georgia – Even the weather couldn’t stop Darel Christopher Jr. today as he out sprinted the very small but fast field to win the Georgia State Games criterum. The weather was nasty as a cold front came through and it rained all morning long, but that couldn’t stop the BVI. Competing in the 2nd race in as many days, Christopher survived pouring rains and cold temperatures to win the race in a photo finish. Christopher, who was shivering from the cooler than normal temperatures, said that he didn’t realize that it was the last lap until he saw the guy sprint off. “I thought that the man said 2 to go, so I was thinking that we had one more lap,” Darel stated. “I was cold but when I saw that they could not drop me on the straightaway on the backside I felt that I could win it. That junior was strong but I wasn’t worried.” DITC Coach, John Kelly again stated that he was impressed with how the cyclists rode today. “That kid is tough…I like that. He handled the wet course well and stayed upright…that’s the important thing.”
In the women’s race, Olympia Fahie finished 6th. “I don’t like the cold and I was freezing,” Fahie stated. “They tried to drop me on the back stretch but I stayed with them…but it was cold…I couldn’t get warmed up......

The athletes where thrown straight into the competition by their DITC coach, John Kelly. “I needed to see where they are racing wise, and there’s no better way to do it than to race,” Kelly stated. Darel Christopher was 19th in his race, and Olympia Fahie finished 8th in her event. “I was very impressed with what I saw today,” Coach Kelly stated. “They have good fundamentals. Some things need to be improved, but we will work on that…but I was very impressed.” Kelly entered both cyclists into the Category 5 division of the races. Malfunctioning equipment knocks BVI’s Thomas out of CAC Games road race.

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia—For the second successive day, malfunction equipment hampered the British Virgin Islands’ Neil Thomas’ Central American Games performance. Unlike on Friday when he made his games debut in the 44 kilometer time trail where the communications system failed, he was able to finish. This time though, the malfunction cut short his goal of completing a minimum of four laps against pro riders.
Holding on in the chase pack on the second lap of Saturday morning’s 154 kilometer road race on a 12 mile stretch in Barranquilla, Colombia, Thomas’ rear derailuer broke about 1.5 kilometers into his third lap, effectively ending his debut in the competition as one of the few riders to attempt both the time trial and road race.
Thomas said when he competes on successive days, he feels more relaxed and ready to race. “On the first lap, I was hanging in with the peleton, following instructions from Chris (Ghiorse), moving up to the front trying to get in a good position,”

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia—Neil Thomas became the first British Virgin Islands cyclist to compete at the Central American and Caribbean Games, and walked away from Friday’s 44 kilometer time trial satisfied with his performance on the hilly course in Barranquilla, Colombia where he was 17th overall.
While Thomas was eyeing a faster time than his March Commonwealth Games debut, the uphill finish saw him tow the line in one hour, 12 minutes and 35 seconds.
“I was really hard with some really long hills,” Thomas noted after cooling down on the two lap course. “I’m happy with my performance.”

Neil Thomas gunning for BVI cycling record in CAC Games debut!
CARTAGENA, Colombia—When cyclist Neil Thomas clips his shoes into position, grab the handle bars and listen to the final countdown, one thing will be on his mind when he pushes off on the 44 kilometer individual time trial—breaking his BVI national record.
Thomas makes his sport’s debut in the 20th Central American and Caribbean Games this morning, when the time trial begins on the course in Barranquilla, one of three venues around Colombia where the games are being held. Cycling joins Squash—which opened the game last Sunday—and Tennis which begins on Sunday, as the BVI’s debut sports in the games in which they have participated since 1982.
Thomas, who competed at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia in March, said his aim is to better the time on one hour, three minutes, 33.99 seconds he had there and then follow up with by competing in Saturday’s 154 KM road race.
