Last Sunday, Orano Andrews and Sally Blackmore emerged victorious from a small field of riders to dominate the BVI Cycling Federation Highway Challenge.
The course of the ride changed because of the weather and took on a shorter course with riders starting from in front of the parking lot of the former Department of Information Services and Public Relations to Sea Cow’s Bay, turning around before the new bridge and heading over Manuel Reef Hill to return to the roundabout at Prospect Reef to complete one lap.
The race got off to a good start with Anthony Spencer breaking away for an early lead in the first lap but into the fifth of the 10 lap event, his bearings were broken, putting an end to his lead.
Orano Andrews, who was part of the pack of riders behind Spencer and was maintaining a steady pace, broke away and continued the lead until the end of the 32-mile race which he won comfortably in 1:36:11. Andrew Thompson paced hard to catch up with Andrews but had to settle for second place in 1:37: 49.
A sprint finish for third place saw Matt Crossman and young Darel Christopher Jr. sprinting head on to the finish line, in the end, Christopher barely edged Crossman to claim third place in a time of 1:40:27 with Crossman taking fourth place. Former national rider Chris Ghiorse took part in the event and finished in fifth place in a time of 1:56:55.
In the ladies division, Blackmore completed her five laps under an hour in 54:56 to take the top spot with Kay Reddy riding in second in 58:13 and Olympia Fahie in 1:09:22.
The lone junior participant Shaquil Samuel completed his three-lap race in 34:19 but continued to ride on and completed 11 laps of the course.
Mark Bailey dominated the Masters division in a time of 1:50:42 seconds for his 10 laps with Adrian Dale in second in 1:52:31. Though Rusty Burns did not finish, he still managed to complete eight laps in a time of 1:46:10 while Jim Cullimore did not finish
.
The next event on the cycling calendar is the Tour De Tortola which is a two-stage event slated for July 10 and July 11.
