Christopher Jr. wins BVICF Season Opener
In what can be described as a heart-pounding and thrilling 5-mile sprint, young Darel Christopher Jr. carted off the first victory of the BVI Cycling Federation when the 2010 season opened on Sunday around Road Town.
Though the race route was not closed as was announced by the Ministry of Communication and Works, volunteers helped to ensure that traffic flowed and cyclists safely completed their race.
Christopher Jr. sprinted to victory in a time of 16 minutes 37 seconds, leaving Neil Thomas and Antonio Andrews to battle in a sprint-finish for second and third places respectively.
From a field of 11 riders, Kay Reddy surprisingly came in fourth, and claimed first place in the Ladies division. She was followed by Sam Tucker in fifth place who was also the winner of the Master division.
Prior to the commencement of the season opener, the BVICF thought it fit to indulge God’s presence in their season and was privileged to have Brother Meade Malone offered a word of prayer to open the season.
A short opening ceremony heard remarks from Presidents of the Nature’s Little Secret Cycling Club Neil Thomas and the BVI Mountain Bike Club Sally Blackmore. Both Presidents expressed their hope for a safe and accident free cycling season.
President of the BVI Cycling Federation Darel Christopher Sr. said the BVICF started its season with a criterium to get cadet riders and also control traffic to some extent. He noted that though many riders did not show up he believes that it was a good test for riders considering it was a short race and a sprint from beginning to end and a test of cyclists’ endurance.
The BVICF President commended the Minister and Ministry for Communications and Works for their efforts to ensure that the cyclists will have a safe opening season by announcing the closure of the race route during the course of the race.
However, that was not done and Christopher Sr. pointed out that with the BVICF involved in a speed sport and competes in many regional and international competitions, it has seen Police escort in many of those major events overseas and will also be competing in more international events shortly.
“Please don’t wait until we are given recognition at such events to give us the support, now is the time that we need you to help us build our foundation,” the BVICF President appeals.
The BVICF would like to commend its sponsors and volunteers who helped to make the season opener a success.
Our sponsors were Road Town Wholesale for their supply of Gatorade and Supa Value for several bottles water.
