TORTOLA-In a reversal of last weekend’s results, Chris Ghiorse got the better of Orano Andrews this time around to win the BVI Cycling Federation’s College Classic season opener in 1 hour 20 mins and 55seconds. Andrews was 2nd and credited with the same time. Philippe Leroy surprised Mark Smith by nipping him at the line for 3rd. Gareth Thomas rounded out the top 5 finishers.
The race, which attracted 18 cyclists, was very fast from the gun. The top 10 riders were very competitive. “I was disappointed with the turn out, but was impressed with the competitiveness of the cyclists in the beginning,” President David Thomas said. “You could see that at least they came to race and I like that!” The 28mile race that took riders from Pisces restaurant on Frenchman’s Cay, up to the HLSCC and back to West End was very highly contested today. “With it being so windy, I didn’t think that the guys would have ridden so hard, but they did,” Thomas stated. “With such a strong head wind going to the college, you knew that where would be a strong tail wind coming back. You could see that they took advantage of it cause the race was 5minutes faster than last year’s.”
After the race, President Thomas announced that he would not be seeking re-election at the end of this year. “It’s been great, but it’s time for me to do something else,” Thomas stated. “I hope that the next administration will continue to grow the sport. We have a lot of opportunities ahead for us, but we need the athletes.” Also, the 2008 awards were handed out along with some special awards for the 4 sponsors that have supported cycling for the past 16 years. “Without the support from sponsors it would have been hard to survive for the past 16 years, so it’s our way of saying thank you.”
