TORTOLA—Initially facing 155 miles of racing in Friday’s Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Cycling Championships and Sunday’s John T. Memorial in Anguilla, British Virgin Islands cyclists succumbed to spills, flats and retirement.

Cycling Federation president David Thomas said while he missed the OECS race, it seemed most of the regional guys were looking forward to the John T. Memorial, because its one of the biggest races within the region. The OECS race which was scheduled for 12 laps was shortened to nine. All four BVI cyclists—Chris Ghiorse, Neil Thomas, Sally Blackmore and Lisa Adamson—were scheduled to compete in both events. Ghiorse rode 4-5 laps. After three laps, Neil he noted, rode with Blackmore who had fallen off the pace.

Adamson, Thomas said, became the target of riders, because they were surprised she was keeping up with them. “She finished all nine laps and this is after they continuously attacked her,” he noted. “They didn’t work with her but she has a top 20 finish.”

In Sunday’s John T. Memorial race, three minutes in, Neil and Lisa crashed. “Neil actually took the worst of it and while Lisa went down, she wasn’t hurt,” he said. “By the time we tended to them, the race was long gone. Neil injured his shoulder and leg and was not able to continue. Lisa rode and caught some people, but the race was going so fast that she ended up riding 70 miles by herself before she called it a day.”
Lisa Adamson was the BVI's lone finisher.

Ghirose was with the field after the second lap, then turned around, came back in and took off his number. “He said he didn’t have it and didn’t feel like doing it,” Thomas recalled. “I think he’s not mentally prepared to race as yet and that is something he has to deal with, so, that is how our weekend went.”
