TORTOLA—The 10th annual 60-mile Cable and Wireless/bMobile Challenge is schedule for 7 a.m. on Sunday and will serve as a qualifier for the Pan American Cycling Championships in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Cycling Championships/John T. Memorial in Anguilla.

Sunday’s race will also offer prize money and will attract cyclists from the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua according to BVI Cycling Federation president David Thomas.

“I’m hoping that we get a pretty decent turnout,” Thomas said. “We have some interest from throughout the region. Apart from the Antiguans and those from St. Croix, we’ve had interest from one of the French islands, but that is unconfirmed. However, we are looking for better participation and I’m hoping our guys actually come out and race hard and meet the qualifying times.”

Thomas said some guys have been putting in long weekend rides and he hope they have been doing the necessary things, but time will tell on Sunday, who have been doing what.

Among visiting cyclists expected are Neil Lloyd from Antigua and Jyme Bridges Jr. who won the 2007 Caribbean Jr. Cycling Championships but have moved up to the senior division. St. Croix’s Robert Buman, who won last year’s Jason Bally Memorial 100K is also expected, Thomas said, along with other St. Croix riders.

The race starts on the James Walter Francis Highway, across from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, in Road Town. The elite division will complete a three lap circuit from Road Town to Frenchman’s Cay in West End, returning to the Port Purcell Roundabout with the finish at the starting point. Elite women and juniors will complete two circuits while a one lap fun/novice course will also be offered.

The Federation has set the following qualifying Elite Men: 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hour 30 minutes. Elite Women and Jrs: 1:4-1:50. Prizes will be offered as follows: Overall Men 1st $400, 2nd $300, 3rd $250, 4th $100 and 5th $95. All laps per category must be completed to collect on the prizes. No monies are offered to junior riders. Medals and surprises will also be awarded to all winners. Entry fee is $20.00, and registration runs from 6:15 a.m. to 6:50 with the race starting at 7: a.m.
