TORTOLA—David Thomas was unanimously re-elected president of the BVI Cycling Federation, during Sunday’s annual general meeting and awards ceremony that was held at Nexus Café.
Thomas, who was vice president during the Dec 2005 elections but took the reigns after Darel Christopher Sr. resigned in July 2006, is joined by Nature’s Little Secrets Cycling Club president Maria Vieira as vice president. Charlene Hodge is the new secretary, Kathleen Dennis retained the treasurer post, and Dean Greenaway remains as public relations.
“I think I have a good vice president in Maria and she seems to be very dedicated,” Thomas noted. “We will keep our same focus in moving forward and our goals have always been towards 2010. I think 2010 should be a pinnacle in cycling. We have the opportunity to have men and women in both the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Commonwealth Games. In moving forward, we’ll try to grow the sport, inject more youth and keep working hard.”
During his president’s report, Thomas described 2007 as an interesting year. He noted that both Nature’s Little Secrets Cycling Club and the BVI Mountain Bike Club came on stream and were up and functioning well. He said the challenge was for the clubs to start developing youth cyclists. “We need youth cyclists for the sport to develop or else our sport will die,” he pointed out.
While there wasn’t a meeting last year, Thomas noted that the BVI hosted the Caribbean Cycling Championships, which were the biggest of the championships held to date with a record countries participating. He said his only disappointment was that BVI cyclists did not complete the course.
Thomas congratulated Lisa Adamson and Olympia Fahie, for becoming the only BVI Caribbean Cycling champions, a feat accomplished this season. Adamson won the time trial silver medal at the Elite Championships held in Martinique, while Fahie won both the time trial and road race in the Jr. Championships held in Barbados. “It’s a credit to the work we have done as a small federation,” Thomas said.
The following awards were presented during Sunday’s ceremony.
