Tour de Tortola
TORTOLA—BVI Cycling Federation officials are expecting cyclists from Antigua and the U.S. Virgin Islands for Sunday’s 44 mile Tour de Tortola. The 7 a.m. race begins at Clarence Thomas Ltd., and circumnavigates Tortola.
“Everything is set and ready to go,” Federation president David Thomas said. “We are expecting a pretty sizeable field from the USVI and our local people. The last word that was three cyclists—including three time champ Robert Marsh—will be coming. He will be joined by Cliff Williams and Bryan Lynn, but things change and we’ll see what happens.”
Among the people to watch, Thomas said Phillippe Leroy is aiming for his first victory. Leroy has won the national championship but never the Tour de Tortola. “All I want to do is to win it once, just once,” Leroy said. “I’ll be happy with that.”
Thomas said the women’s division should be interesting this year as more women are riding and defending champion Louise Depuy of St. John is expected to participate. “She’s suppose to be bring a few friends with her and Patlian Johnson is focused and riding well. It should be an interesting to see how that goes.”
Thomas said St. Thomas’ Tim Smith who rode the Cable and Wireless Challenge and Gabriel Jeminez who rode last year’s Jason Bally Memorial is also expected. “Jiminez’s riding has improved tremendously,” Thomas noted. “He finished third in the St. John Festival race. If they come, it will make an interesting race. I hope everybody comes out and supports our cyclists this Sunday. There’s no horse racing that that so there shouldn’t be any problems.”
The race will start at Clarence Thomas Ltd., on Wichams Cay, head to West End, Steel Point, Long Bay, Apple Bay, Carrot Bay then up to Windy Hill and across to the Ridge Road. From there, the will had to Little Dix Hill and out to the Balsam Ghut Prison, through Thomas Land in out to the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport then head back to finish at Clarence Thomas Ltd.
