ABOUT US

When Sports Officer Cliff Williams organized a bicycle race from Road Town to West End in 1993, local cyclists Jim Cullimore, Darel Christopher, and Chris Ghiorse were 3 of the 5 total cyclists that showed up.

Later that year, Jim, Darel, and Chris were instrumental in forming teams to compete in the Paradise Island Triathlon in St. Thomas USVI. The BVI Bike Club was formed soon after as a way for people who shared the passion for riding to get together on Saturdays and Sundays to ride. That was the beginning of what is now the BVI Cycling Federation.

With over 40 members and supporters, the BVI Cycling Federation is still a relatively young organization, but with a long string of successes both home and abroad. The BVI Cycling teams have competed all over the Caribbean, and were dominant in the Caribbean Cup Mountain Bike Series for 3 straight years!! We still hold the Caribbean Cup Mountain Bike Expert and Master's Champions and the Junior Downhill Champion!! 2002 was a year of firsts for the Cycling Federation.

The Federation moved towards road racing, which was never really practiced here because of our "steep mountains." We participated in the Caribbean Cycling Championships for road racing. Also in 2002, the Federation was invited to participate in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester England, a first for cyclist in the BVI. It was at these games that the BVI Cycling Federation was accredited to the British Cycling Federation and subsequently membership to the UCI.

The BVI Cycling Federation celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and the Federation has turned its focuses towards women and youth. It is the goal to involve more women cyclist and cultivate the youth program. Already more women have competed for the year. On the 3rd of April 2003, the biggest accomplishment of the Federation history happened when the UCI granted the BVI Cycling Federation its independent status.

With a full season of races in both road and mountain, and with the National Championship in its 10th year, we will continue to strive for the best and continue to make cycling the premier sport of the BVI.
